Is Anthony Waterer Spirea deer resistant?

Do deer eat Anthony Waterer spirea?

Sometimes. Rutgers rates Spiraea x bumalda Seldom Severely Damaged, B, and Iowa State lists it in the same tier, but NC State's entry carries the sentence the bridalwreath entry does not: "This plant may be damaged by deer." The soft summer growth and the flat flower heads are what go, and the shrub is not.

Where it grows

NC State: zones 3a to 8b, 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 5 wide, full sun or partial shade, flowering May to August. It resists drought, erosion and pollution and has no serious pests, and it "can act as an aggressive self-seeder and escape cultivation," spreading by suckers as well. The Japanese spirea it descends from is listed as invasive across the Southeast.

Where the flower heads are being taken, one application of the 20 percent egg spray Colorado State rates High as the buds form, and again at about thirty days for the second flush. Most years, nothing.

If it is browsed

It flowers on new wood and is cut hard in early spring anyway, so a browse is a pruning. Shear the eaten heads with the spent ones and it flowers again in weeks.
