Deer Fence Materials Compared

Polypropylene, welded wire, woven wire and metal. What each costs, how long it lasts, and which one your site actually needs.

Four materials cover almost every deer fence. They are not interchangeable, and the cheapest one is right more often than people expect.

Polypropylene mesh

The default for garden perimeters. Black plastic mesh, typically 7.5 or 8 feet, hung on posts or existing trees.

For: cheapest per foot by a wide margin, almost invisible at 20 feet, light enough for one person to install, will not rust.

Against: rodents chew through it at ground level, and deer that hit it at speed can tear it. Expect 8–12 years, less in heavy sun.

Use it when the fence is a garden boundary rather than livestock-grade infrastructure, and appearance matters.

Welded wire

Rigid galvanised grid, welded at each intersection. Sold in panels or rolls.

For: rodent-proof, holds its shape, will not sag between posts, 20+ year life.

Against: heavier, needs proper post spacing, and the rigidity means it does not follow uneven ground well. Highly visible.

Use it when you need the bottom 3 feet to resist chewing, or where the fence doubles as protection against rabbits and groundhogs.

A common and sensible hybrid: welded wire for the bottom 3–4 feet, polypropylene above. You get chew resistance where it matters and low cost and low visibility up top.

Woven wire

Wire crossed and knotted rather than welded, so joints flex instead of snapping.

For: far better on uneven or sloping ground than welded wire, and much more forgiving of impact. Agricultural-grade lifespan.

Against: more expensive than welded, and heavy enough that installation is genuinely a two-person job.

Use it when the ground is uneven, the run is long, or livestock are also in the picture.

Metal panels

Rigid decorative panels, usually powder-coated steel or aluminium.

For: the only option that looks intentional in a front garden. Effectively permanent.

Against: by far the most expensive per foot, and rarely available at a genuine 8 feet. Most decorative panels top out around 6, which is not tall enough on its own.

Use it when appearance is the constraint, and pair it with double fencing or an angled top to make up the height.

What actually fails

Not the mesh. In practice fences fail at the ground line where a gap opens and deer go under, and at the gate. Spend the attention there rather than upgrading the mesh a grade.

What to look for on the spec sheet

Category is most of the decision. Within a category, four numbers separate fencing that lasts from fencing that gets replaced, and all four are on the listing if you know to look.

Welded wire

Woven wire

Twelve and a half gauge high-tensile, and fixed-knot rather than hinge-joint. Hinge joints slip under impact and the mesh gradually loses its shape; fixed knots do not. Class 3 galvanising roughly doubles the life over Class 1 for a small premium.

Posts, which decide whether any of it stays up

An 8 ft fence needs 10 ft posts, because two feet goes in the ground. Steel T-posts should be at least 1.33 lb per foot; the lighter ones bend when you drive them into anything stony.

Line posts every 10 to 15 feet, tighter on exposed sites. Corners and ends are a different component entirely and need bracing, not just a heavier post. A kit that ships the same post for every position will sag at the corners within a year.

Where the money is worth spending

In order:

  1. Height. An eight-foot fence in cheap mesh beats a six-foot fence in anything.
  2. The ground line. Stakes every 3 to 4 feet, not the 8 to 10 most kits supply. Deer go under far more often than over.
  3. Corner bracing. The most common structural failure.
  4. The gate. Almost never included, and the most likely point of failure once installed.
  5. Mesh grade. Genuinely last. Upgrading the mesh while leaving the ground line stapled every ten feet is money spent on the wrong problem.
