Deer Fence Gates

The most common failure point in an otherwise sound fence, and the part most kits leave out.

A fence is only as good as its worst point, and that point is almost always the gate.

Match the fence height

A 4-foot gate in an 8-foot fence is a 4-foot fence. UC's statewide IPM guidance puts it plainly: gates should be equal to the height of the fence, and they must be kept closed. This sounds obvious and is nevertheless the most common mistake in garden deer fencing, because tall gates are awkward and people compromise.

If a full-height swing gate is impractical, use a full-height mesh panel on a simple frame, or run the mesh across the opening with a walk-through overlap.

Close the ground gap

Gates need clearance to swing, and that clearance is a deer door. Deer go under far more readily than over.

Fixes, roughly in order of cost:

  • A raised timber or stone threshold across the opening
  • A mesh apron pegged flat on the ground under the swing
  • A drop-pin at the closed position that seals the bottom edge

Anything over 6 inches will be used.

It has to close by itself

The most reliable gate is one nobody has to remember. Self-closing hinges cost very little and eliminate the single largest cause of fence failure, which is a gate left open.

If you have a gate that gets propped open during work, add a second inner gate rather than relying on discipline.

Latch height

Deer cannot operate a latch, so height is about people. Put it where it can be reached from both sides without reaching through the mesh. Reaching through is how mesh gets stretched and eventually torn.

Latches that work at deer height

  • Two-sided gate latch

    Operable from both sides, so the gate is not propped open by whoever came through it last.

  • Gravity latch

    Falls shut under its own weight rather than relying on someone to click it home.

  • Basic hook-and-eye latch

    The cheap option, and adequate on a light pedestrian gate that self-closes.

Vehicle access

Wide openings are the hardest case. Options that work:

Two leaves meeting in the middle, each braced, with a centre drop-pin into a ground socket. Standard and reliable.

A removable panel for openings used a few times a year. Much cheaper than a functioning wide gate.

A cattle grid does not stop deer. Deer walk over them. Do not substitute one for a gate.

Frame it properly

Gate posts carry more load than any other post in the fence. They take the full weight of the leaf plus the leverage of it swinging. Set them deeper, in concrete, and brace them back to the fence line. A sagging gate stops sealing at the bottom within a season, and then you have a deer door again.

The hardware that decides whether it lasts

A gate fails as hardware long before it fails as a design. Five components, and only one of them is usually on the receipt.

Buy the hinges for the leverage, not the weight. A 4 ft wide leaf puts far more force on the top hinge than its weight suggests, and the top hinge is what fails first.

Brace it the right way round

The direction depends on what the brace is made of, and it gets reversed constantly.

  • A rigid wooden brace works in compression. It runs from the bottom corner on the hinge side up to the top corner on the latch side.
  • A cable or rod with a turnbuckle works in tension. It runs the other way, from the top corner on the hinge side down to the bottom corner on the latch side.

Fit either one backwards and it does nothing. The gate sags, the bottom stops sealing, and the fence has a deer door in it again.
