Repellents, sprays, home remedies and devices, measured against the trial data rather than the packaging. What works, what fades, and what never worked.
Repellents work, within limits worth stating first
Repellents reduce browsing. They do not stop it, and no repellent turns a garden into a place deer will not enter.
That is not a criticism, it is the specification. University trials repeatedly find the better products cutting damage by a substantial margin rather than eliminating it, and a product that cuts damage by two thirds is genuinely useful on a perennial border. It is not useful as the only thing standing between a hungry herd and a young orchard.
So the honest framing is this. Repellents are the right tool for a moderate problem across a wide area, for plants you can physically reach, and for the seasonal windows when pressure peaks. Where you need a plant to survive absolutely, a fence is the only method that does not depend on how hungry the animal is.
The two mechanisms, and why one is much better
Every repellent works in one of two ways, and the difference decides how much damage you take before it helps.
Odour repellents are detected on approach, before the deer commits to a bite. The plant is never damaged. These are the ones built around putrescent egg solids, blood meal, garlic and predator scent, and they work by smelling like something rotting or like a predator, which triggers avoidance rather than distaste.
Taste repellents are detected after the bite. Capsaicin and bittering agents fall here. The deer takes a mouthful, dislikes it, and leaves, which means you have already lost a leaf and possibly a growing tip. On a hosta that is a nuisance. On the single leader of a young tree it is the whole problem.
The practical rule: prefer odour repellents, and treat taste repellents as a supplement. Products combining both are common and sensible, but if you are choosing one, choose the one that works before the bite.
What the trials actually found
The consistent finding across independent university and extension testing is that putrescent whole egg solids outperform nearly everything else, and that the gap is not small.
Egg-based products are the ones that keep winning, and the mechanism is plausible: sulphurous compounds from decomposing egg protein read to a deer as carrion, which is a predator cue rather than merely an unpleasant smell.
Capsaicin products test respectably but lower, for the mechanical reason above. Soap, human hair, and most home remedies test poorly or not at all.
This matters because it means the most effective repellent available is also one you can make. The homemade egg-based recipe reproduces the active ingredient in the commercial sprays that win those trials, at a fraction of the cost, and garlic is the usual companion ingredient and worth understanding on its own.
Reapplication is the entire programme
The single largest cause of repellent failure is not choosing the wrong product. It is applying it once.
Efficacy falls off over roughly two to four weeks in dry conditions as volatile compounds dissipate. Heavy rain removes most of a non-sticking product in a single event. New growth is unprotected the moment it appears, which in spring means a plant can be substantially uncovered within a week of spraying even without rain.
What follows is a schedule rather than a purchase:
- Apply on a dry day with a few hours of drying time before rain.
- Reapply every two to four weeks through the growing season.
- Reapply after heavy rain, regardless of when you last did it.
- Reapply when there is a flush of new growth, especially in spring.
- Look for products described as rain-resistant or sticking, which use a binder to survive weather. They cost more and reduce the frequency.
Temperature matters too. Most products need application above about 40°F to adhere properly, which constrains late-winter use in exactly the season when browsing pressure is highest.
Rotate, because deer habituate
A signal that never changes and never carries a consequence gets ignored. This is the mechanism behind every failed scare device, and it applies to scent as well.
Rotating between two or three products with genuinely different active ingredients keeps the signal novel. Rotating between two egg-based products with different labels does not, so read the active ingredients rather than the branding. A reasonable rotation is an egg-based product, a capsaicin product, and a third with a different base again.
This is also the honest explanation for why so many home remedies appear to work at first. Almost anything new produces a short-lived effect. The question is never whether something worked for a fortnight, it is whether it is still working in September.
The folk remedies, assessed honestly
Three come up constantly, and all three have a real answer rather than a dismissal.
Irish Spring soap is the most popular folk remedy in deer gardening. It has a genuine mechanism, in that strongly perfumed tallow-based soap does deter to some degree, and it has a genuine limit, in that it protects a very small radius and washes away. Milorganite is a nitrogen fertiliser used off-label as a repellent. It does have an effect, and it is also being applied to your soil in quantity, which has consequences beyond deer. The honest limits are worth knowing, and it did not appear anywhere in the keyword or trial evidence that would justify treating it as a first choice.
Predator urine sells on an intuitive story that does not survive contact with the evidence as well as the marketing suggests. The effect is real and fades faster than the label implies, partly because deer in suburban areas encounter coyote scent constantly without consequence. Predator urine covers why.
The pattern across all three: a real but small effect, oversold, and reliably outperformed by an egg-based spray costing less.
It is worth saying why these persist despite that. Every one of them is cheap, visible and satisfying to deploy, and all three benefit from the same statistical accident. Browsing is episodic. A gardener tries something during a quiet fortnight, sees no damage, and concludes it worked. The remedy gets recommended, the recommendation spreads, and nobody records the autumn when the hedge was stripped anyway. That is not gullibility, it is what a small sample and a strong motivation produce, and it is exactly the gap controlled trials exist to close.
Choosing between the options

Applying it so it actually works
Most of the difference between a repellent that helps and one that does not is in the application rather than the bottle.
Spray to the height that matters. Deer feed from ground level to about five feet, and higher after settled snow raises them. Covering the lower five feet of a shrub thoroughly is worth more than a light pass over the whole plant.
Cover the undersides. A deer takes a leaf from below and from the side, not from directly above. A spray applied only to the upper surfaces leaves the approach untreated, and this is one of the most common reasons a correctly chosen product underperforms.
Wet the foliage without drenching it. You want an even film that dries onto the leaf. Runoff is wasted product, and on a still day it ends up in the soil.
Use a pump sprayer, not a trigger bottle, for anything larger than a few plants. Egg-based mixes in particular need agitation and will block a fine nozzle, so use a coarser setting and strain a homemade batch before it goes in.
Treat the perimeter as well as the target. Deer sample at the edges of a planting first. Treating the outer plants of a border more heavily than the interior spends the product where the decision gets made.
Mind what you are going to eat. Egg-based repellents are not intended for edible parts of food crops, and capsaicin on a leaf you will later handle or eat is its own problem. Keep repellents to ornamentals and to the non-edible parts of fruit trees, and read the label rather than assuming.
Keep a note of dates. The programme fails when reapplication slips, and almost nobody remembers accurately three weeks later. A note on a calendar is the cheapest part of the whole exercise and the one that most determines whether it works.
Where repellents beat fencing, and where they do not
Repellents win on cost per area covered, on anything you cannot fence, such as a front garden with an ordinance or a long border, and on seasonal problems where the pressure has a start and an end.
Fencing wins whenever failure is unacceptable. A repellent programme has a bad week when you are away, or ill, or it rains for ten days. A fence does not. For a young orchard, a vegetable garden, or a hedge representing years of growth, that difference decides it, and what a fence costs is driven by perimeter rather than area, which usually argues for enclosing one valuable bed rather than a boundary.
The two also combine well. A fence around the vegetable garden plus a repellent programme on the ornamental borders is the arrangement most people end up with, and it is a sensible allocation rather than a compromise.
Before you spray anything
Confirm it is deer. Deer have no upper incisors and tear rather than cut, leaving a ragged stripped stub, while a clean 45-degree cut is rabbits and ragged holes in leaves are usually slugs. A repellent aimed at the wrong animal is money and effort spent on nothing, and identifying the damage takes two minutes.
Then consider whether the planting is the actual problem. If the same bed is stripped every year, replacing the plants with something from the rarely damaged tiers is cheaper than spraying the same vulnerable plants indefinitely, and it does not need doing again every three weeks.
Hot Pepper and Capsaicin Repellents
Capsaicin does affect deer. Most products carry so little of it that the manufacturer's own label tells you to multiply the rate a hundredfold.
Milorganite as a Deer Repellent
A lawn fertiliser used off-label as a repellent. There is real trial data, and it is more specific and more limited than the folklore.
Predator Urine as a Deer Repellent
Deer do read predator scent. The commercial product is diluted twenty-fold, usually applied the least effective way, and registered without an efficacy test.

It is the most repeated deer remedy on the internet. The one trial that scored it rated it low to medium, and some deer ate the soap.

Garlic is in nearly every repellent recipe. In the trials that ranked products head to head, the garlic-dominant ones finished last.
