Garlic as a Deer Repellent

Garlic is in nearly every repellent recipe. In the trials that ranked products head to head, the garlic-dominant ones finished last.

Garlic appears in almost every deer repellent recipe, homemade and commercial. The reasoning is that deer avoid strong sulphurous smells, garlic is emphatically sulphurous, and therefore garlic repels deer.

The first two are true. The third does not survive the trial data, and an earlier version of this page said otherwise. This is the correction.

Where garlic actually finished

The USDA Forest Service screened twenty commercial repellents on western red cedar seedlings against captive black-tailed deer across an eighteen-week winter. Both garlic-dominant products landed in the least effective tier, and neither qualified for the spring re-test.

The same trial found that eight of the nine most effective products over the first eleven weeks gave off sulphurous odours. That result is the origin of the garlic reasoning, and it does not support it: the effective products were built on decaying animal protein, putrescent egg and slaughterhouse waste. Sulphurous smells work. Garlic is a sulphurous smell that does not.

A systematic review of the repellent literature reached the same place. Meat and blood odours and predator scent were the strongest categories. Garlic did not emerge as a top performer.

In Connecticut, Deer-Off, which carries garlic alongside putrescent egg and capsaicin, was among the products that did not differ significantly from untreated controls.

What is actually in a "garlic repellent"

This is the detail that explains why some garlic products do work, and it is not the garlic.

Bobbex gets called a garlic repellent constantly. Its garlic oil sits at roughly one fifty-fourth the concentration of its egg solids. The egg is doing the work and the garlic is a rounding error on the label.

Run the table the other way and the pattern is stark: the more garlic a product contains, the worse it did.

The chemistry is real, and fragile

None of this means garlic is inert. It means the active compound is far harder to keep alive than the recipes assume.

Intact garlic is close to odourless. Alliin sits in the cytoplasm, the enzyme alliinase sits in the vacuole, and nothing pungent exists until damage brings them together. The smell is the wound response, which is why a whole clove does nothing and a crushed one is violent.

Allicin is what forms, and it is unstable. In water at room temperature its chemical half-life is about eleven days. In vegetable oil it collapses to about three hours, with activity gone far sooner.

Three things the standard recipe gets wrong

The usual homemade instruction runs: crush a bulb, steep in hot water for twelve hours, strain, add soap, spray. Nearly every step damages the thing being made.

Steeping for twelve hours does not extract more. Conversion of alliin to allicin is essentially complete within about thirty seconds of water reaching crushed tissue. A long steep gives the allicin that already formed more time to degrade. It is not extraction, it is decay.

Hot water destroys the enzyme. Heat abolishes alliinase. If garlic is crushed and immediately dropped into hot water, the enzyme dies before it finishes working. Crushing and letting it stand for ten minutes first preserves the effect, because the allicin has already formed by then.

Vinegar added early stops it dead. Alliinase is inactive at pH 3.5 and below. Add vinegar to a mix before the garlic has been crushed and rested and no allicin forms at all.

There is a fourth, smaller one: allicin is most stable between pH 5 and 6, and concentrated solutions hold up better than dilute ones. Diluting a garlic concentrate speeds its decay rather than merely spreading it.

If you are going to make this, crush, wait ten minutes, then add cool water and anything acidic. Spray the same day.

Garlic clips contain no allicin

Steam-distilled garlic oil, which is what garlic clips and most "10% oil of garlic" products use, contains no allicin whatsoever. Distillation converts it to allyl polysulfides, mainly diallyl disulfide and diallyl trisulfide. Oil-macerated garlic is different again, mostly vinyldithiins and ajoene.

So the two commonest commercial forms of garlic repellent are not delivering the compound the folk explanation is built on. They may still smell strongly. They are not allicin products, and the trial results for the oil-based ones were poor.

The delivery problem, which is worse than the ingredient

Even a good active fails when hung in the air rather than put on the plant.

In the USDA work, scent sachets only reduced browsing when hung close enough to the terminal buds that material could drip onto the foliage. Hung on stakes at half the seedling's height, they failed. The invisible odour barrier does not exist.

Captive white-tailed deer also habituate quickly to odour delivered by sachet, and that habituation limits it exactly when feeding motivation is high, which is the situation you bought a repellent for.

Whatever you use, put it on the plant.

What the extension table quietly says

University of Maryland Extension publishes a repellent longevity table. Capsaicin and castor oil get "up to 30 days". Putrescent egg products get "one to three months or more".

Garlic oil gets no duration at all. The entry reads only: reapply after heavy rain.

That is the clearest statement of the evidence anyone has published. Every other class has an interval because someone measured one.

Nobody has checked

Garlic and garlic oil both sit on the EPA's minimum-risk list, so a garlic-only deer repellent is exempt from federal registration entirely and EPA never reviews it.

Even for products that are registered, EPA generally does not require efficacy data for a non-public-health claim. A label reading "repels deer" has never had to be demonstrated. Registration speaks to safety, not to whether it works.

Where this leaves it

Garlic is not useless, but it is not the ingredient people think it is, and it should not be the thing you rely on.

  • If a product works and contains garlic, look at what else is in it. Usually putrescent egg, usually at fifty times the concentration.
  • As a rotation partner it is defensible, because alternating an odour with a taste-based repellent like capsaicin makes habituation harder than either alone.
  • As primary protection it is the wrong choice. Egg-based sprays beat it in every head-to-head comparison found.
  • Planting garlic or ornamental alliums around a bed is a pleasant traditional practice and a mild effect at best. Nothing in the literature supports it as protection.

Apply on a windless day above 40°F, with several dry hours afterwards so it can set. Odour repellents are less effective in real cold, which is the same winter gap that catches most of this category.

The head-to-head trials above used captive black-tailed deer in Washington and white-tailed deer in Connecticut and Maryland. Nobody has run the equivalent comparison on mule deer, so the ranking is white-tailed and black-tailed evidence being applied more broadly than it was earned.
