Homemade Deer Repellent That Actually Works

One homemade recipe rates as well as the best commercial products. It is eggs and water, and the details that make it work are small and specific.

Most homemade deer repellents do not work. One does, it rates alongside the best commercial products in controlled trials, and it costs about two dollars a batch.

The recipe

20 per cent whole egg, 80 per cent water. That is the whole thing.

Roughly two eggs per quart, or eight per gallon. Against captive mule deer it rated High, the top band, level with the best commercial products tested in the same programme. It is weather resistant and needs reapplying about every 30 days.

One detail decides whether you enjoy making it. Remove the chalaza, the white rope of membrane attached to the yolk, before mixing. Leave it in and it will block the sprayer, which is the single most common reason people abandon this recipe after one attempt.

Blend thoroughly, strain through a sieve anyway, and spray to runoff on the foliage you are protecting.

Why eggs, of all things

Because rotting protein smells like something died, and to a browsing animal that is information.

In the largest head-to-head comparison, twenty commercial repellents on captive black-tailed deer over eighteen weeks, the pattern was unambiguous. Fear-inducing repellents beat pain, taste and conditioned-avoidance products. Eight of the nine most effective products over the first eleven weeks emitted sulphurous odours, and the ones built on decaying animal protein came out on top.

A systematic review of the repellent literature reached the same conclusion independently: odour repellents based on meat and blood, and on predator scent, were the most effective categories.

The benchmark product in that trial was 37 per cent putrescent whole egg solids. It virtually eliminated browsing for four weeks, gave good protection for eight to twelve, and declined significantly after twelve to sixteen.

Your kitchen version is more dilute than that and needs monthly reapplication rather than quarterly. It is the same mechanism.

Why this beats a scent barrier

Put it on the plant, not around it.

The same body of work found that scent sachets only reduced browsing when hung close enough to the terminal buds for material to drip onto the foliage. Hung on stakes at half the plant's height, they failed. Contact repellents applied to the plant outperformed area repellents throughout.

There is no invisible odour fence. There is a treated leaf and an untreated one.

What to skip, and why

Every one of these appears in homemade repellent lists. None of them survives testing.

The bittering result is worth understanding rather than just noting. Omnivores avoid bitter tastes; herbivores are largely indifferent to them at the concentrations used in repellents. A deer is not a person, and "it tastes horrible" is a human prediction rather than a deer one.

The soap question has its own page, because it is asked so often.

Milorganite sits in an odd middle: real trial data, real effect, and it stops releasing below about 55°F, so it is a growing-season measure only. Garlic belongs on the skip list, which surprises people. Both garlic-dominant products in that twenty-product trial landed in the least effective tier, and the commercial products people call garlic repellents are egg products carrying garlic at a fraction of the egg concentration.

Getting the application right

The recipe matters less than these do.

  • Above 40°F, windless, with several dry hours afterwards so it can set on the leaf.
  • Every 30 days, and after heavy rain. Put it in the calendar, because the failure mode of this product is not reapplying it.
  • New growth is untreated growth. Whatever you sprayed last month is not on the leaf that opened this week, and new growth is the most attractive part of the plant.
  • Spray leaf undersides as well, up to about six feet.
  • Start before the damage. It takes up to four weeks of feeding for a deer to build the rumen microbes needed to digest a new food source. An animal that has switched onto your hedge has invested in eating it and will not give it up quickly.

Rotate it with something unrelated

Habituation is real, and it is specific.

Captive white-tailed deer habituated quickly to odour delivered by sachet, which limited its usefulness exactly when feeding motivation was high. The counter is to alternate an odour repellent with one that works by a different mechanism, so the animal has to habituate to two unrelated signals at once.

Capsaicin is the natural partner, because it works by pain rather than smell. Buy on declared concentration rather than packaging, since that number varies enormously across the category.

Where the honest limits are

Nothing eliminates browsing. In the eighteen-week trial, no product did, at any concentration.

Expect 30 per cent, hope for 50. Minnesota Extension sets that as the benchmark: a 50 per cent reduction in deer browse is very successful, and 30 per cent is the likelier result. A third fewer plants browsed is a good outcome for a border and no use at all for a cutting garden or a vegetable bed, where the whole product is intact.

Late winter is the weak point. Deer damage peaks when fat reserves are lowest, and that is when repellents are least reliable and hardest to apply. If the planting genuinely matters, a fence is the answer and every spray on this site is a way of postponing that decision.

Edibles need care. Raw egg on something you intend to eat is a food safety question rather than a horticultural one. Use it on ornamentals, and on food crops use a product cleared for them, observing the pre-harvest interval on the label.

Two things worth knowing about the products

Putrescent whole egg solids sit on the EPA's minimum-risk list, so an egg-based repellent is exempt from federal registration and EPA never reviews it.

And even for products that are registered, EPA generally does not require efficacy data for a non-public-health claim. A label saying "repels deer" has never had to be demonstrated to anyone. Registration speaks to safety, not to whether it works.

The trials cited used captive mule deer in Colorado and captive black-tailed deer in Washington, plus field work on white-tailed deer in Connecticut. The mechanism is consistent across all three, and the specific numbers were measured on the animals named rather than on yours.
