Predator Urine as a Deer Repellent
Deer do read predator scent. The commercial product is diluted twenty-fold, usually applied the least effective way, and registered without an efficacy test.

Predator urine is the deer repellent with a story attached. A coyote came through here, the reasoning goes, and a deer that smells it will decide to browse somewhere else. The scent part is real. Deer do tell predator urine from other urine, and that has been demonstrated properly. Almost everything after that is weaker than the packaging suggests, and the reason is not the biology.
The EPA registration is not what it looks like
Coyote urine has been a registered biochemical pesticide since 2006, fox urine since 2007. A registration number on the label reads like a quality signal.
It is not one. The EPA's registration document for these products says this under the heading for efficacy data:
Efficacy data were not submitted and are not required.
The agency assessed whether predator urine is safe to put in a garden. It never asked whether it repels deer, because for a product in this category it does not have to. The number on the bottle means the contents will not poison your soil.
It goes further than absent paperwork. The compound responsible for the repellent effect has never been identified. Batches are quality-controlled against a marker peak on a chromatogram, and the registration document notes that the link between that peak and the product's repellency is as yet undetermined. The manufacturer is matching a squiggle on a graph without knowing whether the squiggle is the part that works.
What was tested is not what is in the bottle
This is the single most useful thing on this page.
Colorado State University publishes a ranked repellent table drawn from Andelt's captive trials, and coyote urine rates High there, level with Deer Away and a whole-egg spray. That rating is for 100 per cent undiluted urine.
Registered end-use products contain 3.5 to 5 per cent coyote urine. Fox urine products run 1.5 to 5 per cent. One widely sold granular deer repellent is 5 per cent coyote urine and 95 per cent other ingredients.
So the trial people cite when they recommend predator urine tested something twenty times stronger than the thing being recommended. That gap explains more of the disappointment than habituation, weather or deer behaviour do.
Two Connecticut studies, opposite verdicts
Both are good. They disagree because they did different things.
Swihart, Pignatello and Mattina, working at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in 1991, found bobcat and coyote urine significantly reduced white-tailed deer browsing on Japanese yew. Cottontail rabbit urine and human urine did not, which is the cleanest evidence there is that deer respond to predator scent specifically rather than to novelty or to a strong smell. Bobcat beat coyote.
Ward and Williams, also in Connecticut, tested ten commercial repellents on Densiformis yew across two sites from 2006 to 2008. Coyote urine landed in the ineffective group.

The 1991 study sprayed urine onto the plant weekly. The 2010 study tested products as sold. Concentration and delivery are the difference, and both point the same way.
Perimeter application is the popular method and the weak one
The instinct is to treat the boundary, on the theory that you are simulating a predator patrolling the edge of the property. It is a satisfying mental model.
The USDA Forest Service put the problem plainly in its repellent comparison: little evidence suggests animals will abandon areas treated with area repellents, except where highly palatable alternative food is readily available somewhere else. The same publication concludes that chemical repellents work best applied directly to the plants.
Swihart's own results say it twice over. Urine sprayed weekly onto the foliage outperformed urine hung nearby in tubes. Going from weekly to twice-weekly spraying added nothing, so the useful variable was where it went, not how often.
If you are going to use this, put it on the plants you are protecting. The perimeter ring is the version most likely to do nothing.
What the label actually asks for
Almost nobody does this, which is worth knowing before blaming the product.
- Loose granules: twice a week for the first fortnight, then twice a month.
- Sealed packs: one every 10 to 20 feet of perimeter, hung 2 to 4 feet off the ground, replaced every 90 days.
Andelt's mule deer work adds a detail that ruins a lot of applications. Watering treated twigs after application reduced the repellent effect. Rain does the same thing, and so does an irrigation system running the evening you treat.
Not on anything you intend to eat
Registered predator urine products are approved for non-food use only. The EPA established no food tolerance, because no food use was requested. Residential gardens and yards, ornamental planting, nothing that ends up on a plate.
This gets ignored constantly, because the vegetable patch is exactly what people most want to defend. Use a repellent cleared for edibles there instead, or fence it.
It might attract something you were not expecting
The EPA's own ecological assessment notes that coyotes or foxes may be drawn to areas where these products are applied, and that the scent is attractive to other canids.
Whether that matters depends on where you live and what else you keep outdoors. It is not a reason to avoid the product. It is a reason not to ring a chicken run with it.
Why it stops working, and the honest answer is contested
The usual explanation is habituation. A scent that never turns into an actual predator stops carrying information, and the deer learns to ignore it.
There is support for that. Kimball and colleagues, testing four repellent modes on captive white-tailed deer, found rapid habituation to odour delivered by sachet and concluded that habituation limits repellents not applied directly to the food.
Swihart's group found something different. Their hanging tubes lost effect over time too, but reapplication restored it, so they attributed the decline to the volatile compounds evaporating rather than to the deer learning. Andelt's mule deer trials found the odour-based repellents fading over the season while a taste-based one, thiram, became more effective as it went on.
These are not reconcilable from the outside, and the practical answer is the same either way. Reapply on schedule, and pair it with something that works by taste rather than by smell, so that fading and habituation are not both hitting the same signal.
Where this leaves it
Predator urine is not a fraud and it is not a solution. Deer genuinely discriminate predator scent. The undiluted material genuinely performs. The commercial product is heavily diluted, usually applied in the least effective way, approved without anyone checking that it works, and beaten in head-to-head testing by egg-based sprays that cost less per season.
Use it as a rotation partner against a taste repellent like capsaicin or a granular like Milorganite, sprayed on the plants rather than around them, and treat the scent as one signal among several. If the planting genuinely matters the answer is a fence, and every repellent on this site is a way of postponing that decision rather than replacing it.
One thing the trials cannot tell you is whether your deer have ever met a coyote. A suburban herd at high density with no real predation pressure and a rural herd that hears coyotes nightly are not the same audience for this product, and no study has separated them cleanly.
