Corrections are genuinely welcome. Plant data has been wrong on this site before and was fixed rather than defended, and the methodology page keeps a live count of what has been verified against a second source and what has not. If you garden somewhere and see a rating that does not match what the deer actually do, that is useful information.

Privacy

No accounts, no payments, nothing to sign up for. There is no form on this site that asks who you are. The one thing that is collected is anonymous usage analytics, described below.

The search box sends what you type to the server so it can return results. That query appears in ordinary server logs and is not stored, profiled or linked to you.

This site uses Google Analytics 4.It was added on 31 July 2026 and it sets cookies, which is a change from what this page said before. It records which pages are visited, roughly where in the world from, and which site sent you. Google anonymises IP addresses in GA4 by default. It is here to answer “is anyone reading this”, not to identify you, and no advertising or remarketing features are enabled.

What you are asked, and where. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland analytics cookies are switched off before you arrive, and a banner offers to turn them on. Everywhere else, including the United States, they are on by default and no banner appears. Your choice is stored in a cookie and overrides the regional default on every later visit.

Declining does not make you invisible and is not meant to. The visit is still counted, without a cookie and without anything linked to you or to your other visits. That is the honest version: the page count goes up either way, and what you decline is being followed between visits rather than being counted once.

There are no advertising cookies and no ad network on this site. Advertising and personalisation signals are switched off for everyone, in every country, and are not something the banner can turn on.

Hosting is provided by Vercel, which records standard request data such as IP address, browser and page requested for operational and security purposes. Plant data and all 526 photographs are served from Supabase.

If a newsletter or any other data collection is added later, this section will be updated before it goes live rather than after.

Affiliate links

This site carries affiliate links on some pages, and earns a commission when someone buys through one. It costs you nothing extra. As of 31 July 2026 they appear on the fencing guides only, and every page carrying one says so at the top before any recommendation.

Links go to Amazon. This site is a participant in the Amazon Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

A reference site has to pay for itself somehow, and this is how. Three commitments hold:

  • Any page carrying affiliate links says so at the top, before the recommendation rather than in a footer nobody reads.
  • Nothing gets recommended because it pays better. Where a cheaper or free option works as well, the page says that instead.
  • No review schema and no rating stars on products nobody here has actually used. Google’s reviews guidance asks for evidence of first-hand testing, and inventing it would undermine the one thing this site is trying to be. In practice that means the links point at categories of hardware the guide has already argued for, not at products this site claims to have tested.
  • No prices. They change faster than a page can be updated, and Amazon’s own terms do not allow a static one to be displayed.

This site does not run display advertising and has no plans to.

Terms and disclaimer

This site is a reference, not professional advice. Everything on it is offered in good faith and without warranty.

Three things worth stating plainly:

  • No plant is deer-proof. The ratings describe how heavily deer damage a plant under observation, not what will happen in your garden. Local deer pressure moves every one of them.
  • Check your own state before planting. Invasive and prohibited species lists change yearly and vary by county. The listings here are indicative and are not legal advice.
  • Toxicity notes are not veterinary or medical advice. If an animal or person has eaten something, call a vet or poison control rather than reading a plant page.

Plant descriptions and guides on this site are original and are not to be republished. Photographs belong to their photographers and are used under Creative Commons or public domain terms, credited individually in each caption; those licences are between you and the photographer, not us. See sources.
