Deer Fence Kits: What You Get and What You Still Need

Kits are the fastest route to a working fence, and the fastest route to an expensive gap. What to check before buying.

A deer fence kit bundles mesh, posts and fixings for a given perimeter length. For most gardens it is the sensible way to buy. The components are matched, and you are not guessing at post spacing.

The failure mode is that kits are sold by perimeter length and quietly omit the parts that determine whether the fence works.

Measure the perimeter properly first

Walk it with a measuring wheel, do not estimate from a plan. Kits are sold in fixed lengths and running 15 feet short means either an ugly splice or a second order with new shipping.

Add 10% for corners, slope and the general tendency of real ground to be longer than it looks.

What kits usually include

  • Mesh, typically 7.5–8 ft polypropylene
  • Line posts, usually 10 ft (2 ft goes in the ground)
  • Ground stakes for the bottom edge
  • Zip ties or hog rings
  • Sometimes a top support cable

What kits usually omit

Corner and end bracing. Line posts hold mesh up; they do not resist tension. Every corner needs a braced or guyed post, and most kits ship the same post for every position. This is the single most common reason a kit fence sags within a year.

A gate. Gates are almost never included and are the most likely point of failure.

Enough ground stakes. Kits often supply one every 8–10 feet. Deer go under fences more readily than over them, so stake every 3–4 feet, and closer on uneven ground.

Rodent protection. Polypropylene at ground level gets chewed. If you have rabbits, budget for a welded wire skirt for the bottom 2 feet.

Post spacing

Most kits assume 15 feet. That is fine on flat ground with no wind load. Tighten to 10–12 feet on exposed sites, over rises, and anywhere the fence changes direction.

Realistic budget

For a typical garden perimeter, expect the kit to be roughly 70% of the true cost once bracing, a gate and extra stakes are added. Plan for that up front rather than discovering it halfway through a weekend.

Installation

One person can hang polypropylene on a flat run. Two people is faster and produces a straighter fence, because one can hold tension while the other ties off.

Drive posts before unrolling anything. Unrolled mesh in wind is genuinely difficult to manage alone.

Flag the top line

New fences get run into. Tie flagging tape along the top cable every 10 feet for the first few weeks so local deer learn the fence is there. It prevents both damage to the fence and injury to the animal.

Checking a kit before you buy it

Kits are sold on perimeter length and a photograph. These are the five things worth finding on the listing, and the answers are often absent, which is itself informative.

  1. Mesh height and breaking strength. Height should be 7.5 or 8 ft. Strength should be stated; 650 lb per foot or better is a real fence. A listing that gives height but not strength is usually hiding the strength. See materials for the rest of the spec.
  2. Post length and weight. Ten feet for an eight-foot fence. Steel T-posts at 1.33 lb per foot or heavier.
  3. How many corner posts are included, and whether they differ from line posts. If they are the same part, budget for bracing separately. This is the single most common reason a kit fence sags.
  4. Ground stake count. Divide it into the perimeter. If it works out to one every 8 to 10 feet, you need roughly twice as many.
  5. Whether a gate is included. It usually is not.

What to buy instead of a bigger kit

If the budget is fixed, the upgrade order is the same as for materials: height first, then the ground line, then corner bracing, then the gate. Mesh grade comes last.

A common and sensible pattern is buying the cheapest kit that reaches genuine eight-foot height, then spending the difference on twice the stakes, proper corner bracing and a gate that closes to the ground. That produces a better fence than the premium kit at the same total cost, because the premium is mostly in mesh grade and mesh grade is rarely what fails.
