About Antelope Bitterbrush
Bitterbrush is a grey, small-leaved shrub of dry slopes, three or four feet in most gardens and capable of twelve. Its place on a resistant list needs qualifying: Forest Service records put it at up to 91 per cent of the September mule deer diet. What it has is tolerance, not immunity — it is moderately browse tolerant and recovers from being chewed rather than avoiding it. Kindness kills it. The taproot runs fifteen to eighteen feet down and the plant wants dry, coarse, permeable ground on any slope or aspect; it will not take saline soil and it will not take a watered border. Plant it small, because nearly all of the plant is that root. Fire is the other thing to settle before siting it. Bitterbrush is highly susceptible to fire kill, and while some ecotypes sprout from the root crown afterwards, many do not. Do not count on regrowth from a plant that has burned.
