About Oneseed Juniper
Old plants look built rather than grown: a large shrub or small tree of 6 to 20 feet, gnarled and multi-trunked, with heavy limbs curving up from at or near the base. Be straight about the deer here, though. Mule deer do browse oneseed juniper on winter range, and in parts of south-central New Mexico juniper has been recorded at up to a fifth of their annual diet, so this is a plant that tolerates browsing, not one deer refuse. Buying it small and waiting is the error. Height gain has been measured at roughly six inches a decade, and it is usually regarded as a non-sprouter, so a leader lost to a bad prune or a strimmer is generally the end of the plant you wanted. Buy the size you can live with. Put it in gravelly or sandy dry ground, stop watering once it takes, and protect the leader through the first few winters where pressure is heavy.
