About Upright Prairie Coneflower

Sombrero flowers: a tall brown cone with a few ray petals hanging off it in yellow, red, or both on the same plant, held up on wiry, nearly leafless stalks. The foliage carries a strong odour that puts deer off the plant, though they will still take the flowers. Drought is not what gets it. Heavy clay is. It is intolerant of heavy clay soils and wants clay loam to sandy loam with real drainage underneath; sat wet through the winter it simply goes. It also grows aggressively and will push out weaker neighbours, so keep it well away from anything slow or precious. Grow it from seed and be patient about the first year. The seed needs no treatment, but nine weeks at 40 degrees improves it, which an autumn sowing does for you. Plants raised from seed usually flower in their second season. No fertiliser and next to no irrigation.
