About Mullein
A rosette of huge woolly leaves in the first year, then a single spike up to six feet in the second, then it dies. That woolly texture is why deer refuse it. Common mullein is a listed noxious weed in several western states; the garden hybrids are better behaved and far more ornamental.

Common questions about Mullein
- Is Mullein deer resistant?
- Mullein (Verbascum sp.) is rated Seldom Severely Damaged on the Rutgers NJAES four-tier scale. Light browsing at worst; rarely ruined.
- What hardiness zones does Mullein grow in?
- Mullein is hardy in USDA zones 4 to 8. Outside that range it will either not survive winter or will struggle with summer heat. That is the range across the genus, so a named species or cultivar may be narrower.
- Does Mullein grow in shade?
- No. Mullein wants full sun and will grow thin and flop in shade.
