About Mosquito Plant

Grey-green leaves that smell of mint and bubblegum when you brush past them, on a semi-woody plant of about three feet. Deer tend to walk round strongly aromatic mints, and this is one of the strongest. Cold is not the problem. In the wild it grows out of cracks and crevices in granite cliffs and along canyon edges in New Mexico and west Texas, and it takes −20 °F; what defeats it is heavy ground that stays wet through the winter. Plant it on a slope, in gravel, in a raised bed — anywhere the water leaves. Ignore the common name. There is no evidence it does anything to mosquitoes. Its real business is the run of dark pink tubular flowers from early June until late September, which is exactly when the hummingbirds want them.
