About Front Range Beardtongue

A dense rosette of bright green leaves pressed flat to the ground, then a haze of small blue-violet flowers just above it from May onwards. It grows in the foothills of Colorado and Wyoming and nowhere else.

Colorado's extension service puts it at six to twelve inches, and at that size a plant set into an ordinary mixed bed is simply gone within two seasons - not killed, just shaded over and swallowed. Rocky ground, moderate water, sun or light shade, and nothing beside it that can reach over the top.

The naming causes more trouble than the growing. Front range penstemon, front range beardtongue, blue mist penstemon and blue mist beardtongue are all this one plant. Keep it clear in your head from Penstemon virgatus, wand bloom penstemon, which runs twelve to thirty inches on erect slender stalks and is a different thing entirely.
