About Desert Princesplume

Tall yellow plumes on bare stalks, standing well clear of a low crown of gray-green leaves and of whatever shrubs are around it. Almost nothing grazes it: the plant draws selenium up out of the soil and builds it into its own amino acids in place of sulphur, which makes it toxic to animals.

Expect it to be short lived. This is not a perennial that settles in and thickens up over a decade — three or four good seasons is a fair run, and rich, watered ground shortens even that. Stony or sandy soil and full sun suit it, which is another way of saying it belongs in gravel or on a dry bank rather than anywhere you are looking after.

Seed germinates with no pretreatment at all, unusual among western natives, so the sensible approach is to let a few pods ripen and shed where you want the next generation standing. Treat the colony as permanent and the individual plants as temporary.
