Deer ratings use a four-step damage scale from a university field study (Rutgers NJAES fact sheet E271), still the only large rated list compiled from sustained field observation rather than from other websites.
Growing data is compiled from state extension services, chiefly the NC State Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox. Records are being re-checked one at a time against a second source, and the methodology page says how many have been through that yet. Where we disagree with the scale, usually because a plant deer ignore is invasive here, the plant’s own page says so.
